Education

Guyra and surrounding districts have a large range of quality education options
from preschool to university and everything in between

Preschool and Primary Schools

The Guyra Preschool and Long Day Care Centre offer five-days-a-week childcare from 8am until 6pm for children aged from 6 weeks to 6 years.

Guyra Shire boasts a number of small rural State Primary Schools for K-6 located at Ben Lomond, Black Mountain, Bald Blair, Wongwibinda, Ebor and Tingha.

St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Primary School also caters for students K-6. St. Mary's has approval and funding to construct a brand new school at the rear of its current premises.
The school recently held a sod-turning ceremony to mark the beginning of construction and it is planned that the new shcool will be ready for students at the start of the 2009 school year.

Guyra Central School caters for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Students enjoy a peaceful environment in beautiful grounds covered in grassy lawns and lots of trees.
The advantage of having all students on the one site is the access they have to the expertise of so many different teachers. Students enjoy a high level of support in literacy, numeracy and technology.

Both primary and high school teachers share resources and teaching expertise so that everyone benefits. Visitors to the school comment on how calm the atmosphere is and how friendly and welcoming both the students and staff are. One casual teacher recently remarked: 'I love coming to Guyra because the children are so happy, well behaved and willing to learn'.

Private Schools & Catholic High School

There are three private schools and a Catholic high school located in nearby Armidale. Each day many Guyra children reach their school by travelling on one of the two buses servicing these schools.

The Armidale School (TAS) is an Anglican boarding and day school for boys with co-educational Junior School with classes from Transition (4 years old) to Year 5, an award winning Middle School for boys from Years 6 to 8 and a Senior School for boys from Years 9 to 12.

The Presbyterian Ladies College Armidale (PLC) provides a wonderful environment for educating girls from Pre-kindergarten to Year 12. PLC has a proud academic record.

New England Girls School (NEGS) has for over a century been a home-away-from-home for students from all over Australia and the world. NEGS offers a safe and caring environment with a fine academic, sporting and cultural tradition.

O’Connor Catholic College is a co-educational Catholic secondary school catering for students from Years 7 to 12. The College encourages students of music and the arts as well as the traditional subjects of high school education.

Tertiary Education

Guyra residents have the advantage of having a world-class university and TAFE facilities on their doorstep. The University of New England (UNE) combines the highest academic standards and industry-valued qualifications with flexible modes of learning. Its external students number around 14,000 with almost 4,000 internal students.

Courses range from the Arts to Engineering and UNE has a high reputation for its school education degrees and for its health related degrees. UNE is internationally recognised as one of the great teaching and research universities.
